The birth of Air Europa

In February 1984, Air Europa was initially founded under the name of Air Espana. With the participation of the British charter airline Air Europa in 1986, Air Espana was incorporated into the Airlines of Europe Group and renamed Air Europa. In 1991, the British Air Europe went bankrupt and the Spanish Air Europa went to a group of investors.

Already in 1993 Air Europa removed Iberia’s monopoly in Spain and in 1995 the airline also offered scheduled flights abroad. Starting with London and New York, the number of weekly flights grew to 750 in 1996 and for domestic flights the subsidiary Air Europa Express was founded, which only existed until 2001. In 1998 Air Europa became a member of the new holding company Globalia Corporacion Empresarial.

In 2006, it became a partner of Sky Team and became a full member in 2010.

As a result, Air France-KLM joined the Flying Blue frequent flyer program.

In 2015, the Spanish Aeronova was bought by Air Europa and operates low-cost flights throughout Europe under the name Air Europa Express.

Since November 2019, it is known that the International Airlines Group will buy Air Europa.
